5 Amazing Ideas to Keeping Digital Learning Fun

“Children learn best through play. We also know that learning is not meant to be one-dimensional, particularly for young children.” -Unknown

Preschoolers have great enthusiasm for learning and gaining knowledge. They develop motor, cognitive, language, emotional, social, and know-how skills during this period.

Today, when Preschool At Home Learning is becoming a new normal, teaching preschool kids digitally can be challenging. There are ways to use their need to play with their natural curiosity of the world to make learning fun. You will see that At-Home Learning with your preschool-aged child can be fun and rewarding.

So, how do you make your Preschool Digital Learning engaging?

Here are some suggestions to create fun and engaging activities for your Digital At-Home Learning Preschooler:

Interactive Stories

Kids love stories. They love them so much that if you tell them a story, they’ll sit still for hours and listen to them.

Some stories online can get a little boring after a while, especially if there isn’t much interaction with the voice-over. So make the stories interactive and come to life. Encourage your preschoolers to come up with their own story. Imagine what each character looks like, sounds like, what the background of each scene shows, and where the story is set. As the story builds your child may be excited to share what they have created at your next family dinner.

Take it to the next level and discover the many programs & apps online that help create stories. Ebooks can also be a great resource. An EBook library allows you to enter full-screen mode, giving your kiddos a much larger view of the pictures while you read. You can also create accounts for your kids so they can view books on their own.

Teaching Crafts Online

Preschoolers love hands-on activities. There are many opportunities to “craft” digitally. Guide them with a few simple steps and before you know it, they will be coloring, painting, and creating digitally.

Online Play/Skit

Preschool is not just about teaching children rhymes, colors, letters, sight words, etc. It’s also about developing their social emotional skills. How do we use digital learning to help support this important developmental area? Find templates online that guide your child in developing a play or skit that they can then direct in real life. This can positively influence your child’s social skills as they find the confidence to perform and direct. It is also a wonderful opportunity for parents to be an integral part of this experience.

Not interested in creating the play or skit or have a large group of kids? Find one that has already been developed and provide your child with an opportunity to explore dramatic play. Using the script, assign characters to each child, and put on a skit or play. Try to pick from a short storybook. Breaking the kids into groups to manage parts of the skit or play will also encourage collaboration and cooperation, both important social-emotional skills for preschoolers to develop.

Virtual Field Trips

A great way for your Preschooler to explore the big wide world in your home is virtual. Kids can enjoy experiencing wildlife live feeds, kid-friendly travel documentaries, riding a roller coaster and so much more. Perhaps they could watch a panda live cam from the National Zoo and discuss what a panda’s habitat looks like, what they eat, and their daily routine. You could ask them to point out what they observe about their natural behaviors on the live cam. Have them draw what they experienced, followed by reading a book about pandas.

A few virtual places to visit:

  • Natural History Museum

  • Monterey Aquarium

  • London Zoo

  • Cincinnati Zoo

  • The Louvre, Paris

  • Stonehenge, England

  • The White House

  • Buckingham Palace

Examples:

  • Hop on one leg

  • Moo like to Cow

  • Meo like a Cat

  • Put both hands on your headS

  • Stand on your tippy-toes

Creating virtual scavenger hunts, field trips, and libraries are some of the ways to connect, laugh, and play. Making your Preschool At home learning a more joyful experience.
