What to Look for in a Good Summer Camp

As a parent, you want to make sure that your kids are not only having fun this summer but also learning and growing. If you’re looking for the best summer camp, here are some things to keep in mind so that you can find one that will be the perfect fit.

Family or Individual Focus

The first thing to consider is whether you want a summer camp that caters more toward the group experience or one that allows children to go at their own pace. Some camps will emphasize arts and crafts, while others may focus more on sports and fitness activities.

Camps can be structured either in a way that your child will be with other children in a group, or they can provide lessons so that your child will go at his or her own pace.

Balancing Freedom and Security

When it comes to summer camps, the main question is whether you want one that offers a lot of freedom while still keeping some structure or more security with less free time. A summer camp should give your child a chance to make friends and try new things, but it should also provide them with the structure they need.

At this age, children are also becoming more independent and may want a lot of freedom. On the other hand, some kids look for more security at this age as opposed to independence. It’s important to consider what your child needs; however, some flexibility is important.

Self-motivation will help your child be successful at summer camp.

If you choose one with strict rules and little freedom, you run the risk of your child not enjoying themselves while also becoming bored more easily. This might result in him or her being unruly during your family’s vacation.

On the other hand, having too much freedom and not enough structure might allow your child to do as he or she likes all the time. This may result in a lack of motivation and accomplishments.

Positive Role Models Create Successful Kids

When selecting between different summer camps, another important thing to consider is whether your child will be in a positive environment. It’s very important that your child is exposed to good role models during the summer, otherwise, he or she may not learn how to work hard towards goals or develop any life skills.

Different camps have different personalities and unique focuses. If your child doesn't enjoy the social interactions at camp, you should think about switching. A summer camp that offers lots of activities and involved staff will let your child learn how to work hard, take the initiative, and become more independent.

Motivation is very important when it comes to picking a summer camp because, when kids are motivated they are more likely to succeed and to be happy. When kids are uninterested, they often feel bored and unmotivated while at summer camp, which can lead to issues while on vacation.

Consider your Child's Personality and Interests

Make sure that your child will enjoy the social interactions at camp before you pick one that offers lots of activities. Many parents mistake extra activities as a sign that their children will have a good time, but this isn't always the case.

If your child is shy or prefers to spend more private time with his or her family then consider a camp that has fewer activities and offers more security. On the other hand, if your child likes to take on new challenges and be independent, you should choose one with lots of activities and a focus on teaching new skills.

As you consider whether a certain summer camp is right for your child, discuss these things with him or her first so you can develop the best plan for the summer. If your child is enthusiastic about a certain camp, you’re probably on the right track to making a good choice.
